Dry eyes can make every day feel like a struggle. Whether you are staring at a computer screen all day or enjoying the fresh New Zealand air, that gritty, burning sensation is hard to ignore. Symptoms can range from mild to severe; and at our practice, we see patients every day who think they just have to "live with it.”
The truth is, you don't.
Here is what you need to know about finding relief.
What Causes Dry Eye?
Dry eye isn't just about not having enough tears. Often, it is about the quality of those tears. Your tear film needs a specific balance of water, mucus, and oils. If the oil glands in your eyelids (called the Meibomian glands) get blocked, your tears evaporate too fast, leaving your eyes exposed and irritated - a condition known as evaporative dry eye.
Common triggers include:
Digital Eye Strain: Did you know we blink 50% less when looking at our screen?!
Environmental Factors: Air conditioning, wind, and low humidity can exacerbate dryness.
Aging: Natural tear production often decreases as we get older.
Contact Lenses: Long-term wear can sometimes exacerbate dryness.
Solutions You Can Start Today
You can take small steps at home to protect your vision:
The 20-20-20 Rule: Every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for about 20 seconds.
Warm Compresses: A 5-minute warm eye mask or warm cloth over the eyes can help liquefy blocked oils in your eyelids. Couple this with digital massage of your eyelids to help express these blocked glands.
Hydrate from Within: Increasing your water intake and Omega-3s (found in fish oil) supports a healthy tear film.
Switch Your Drops: Move away from "redness relief" drops (eg decongestants) and toward preservative-free artificial tears.
